Starbucks founder Howard Schultz may be synonymous with entrepreneurial success, but life wasn’t always so bright.

He was born in a very poor family. His father was a driver, but he had to leave the job due to his leg being broken in an accident.

Howard Schultz was born in Brooklyn, New York. His great-grandfather was a tailor and barrel maker like many other Americans, and he was an immigrant himself. Both his parents dropped out of high school, and after the war, his father worked low-wage labor jobs. Initially, he considered playing football as a possible career, but his plans to attend Northern Michigan University on a sports scholarship never materialized.

His family did not have much money and he grew up in a housing estate. Schultz first came across the Starbucks brand while working at a coffee company.

After receiving his degree, Schultz stayed in Michigan and spent a year working at a ski resort. After working as a salesman for Xerox in New York City, he was hired in 1979 as general manager of Hammer plast, the American subsidiary of Swedish cookware company PAI Partners.

Soon after, he joined the company as marketing director. In 1985, Schultz left Starbucks and decided to open his own coffee house. He raised the $500,000 needed to open the first store and launched his business.

Schultz is now worth more than $2.9 billion – not bad for the empire he dreamed up over an afternoon cup of coffee!

His experiences have led him to develop a philosophical approach towards life. He once said in a speech, “I believe that life is a series of near-misses.” “What we consider fate is not fate at all. It’s like seizing the day and accepting responsibility for your future.

By 1996, the company had 46 shops opened across America. By the end of the 1990s, the company had 140 outlets.
